THE TRAINING

University of Chicago, BA in economics and psychology. One discipline studies what people choose and the other studies why they were always going to choose it, and the space between those two answers became my career. I went deep into the neuroscience of influence, the physical machinery of habit, desire, and decision, because I wanted to know where choices actually come from before anyone dressed the answer up in philosophy.

The Anonymity

Stan Taylor is a pen name, and I tell you that on my own about page because this entire operation runs on a bet most publishers would call suicidal: that transparency sells better than polish. The anonymity is permanent. My former clients prefer it, my former colleagues require it, and the work is built to stand without a face attached. You are here because something in your life keeps running a program you never chose, and I know how that program was written.

THE BIG IDEA

Extraction is the organizing principle of the modern world. Medical systems, media, markets, platforms, casinos, and ad networks are engineered to harvest predictable people, and the engineering is superb. Nobody is coming to regulate it away, and no election will vote it out, because the machinery predates every politician who promises to fix it.

THE PROOF

The reader groups are where the theory goes to get tested, and they are the part of this operation I am proudest of. Thousands of members documenting the daily work in public: catches, relapses, guillotines executed, parents holding steady through a storm that Chapter 5 predicted by name. The groups have one strange feature you will notice immediately. They are designed to be outgrown, and when someone announces they are leaving, we congratulate them. Both books were built to make you stop needing them, and that includes needing me.

Stop being predictable

That single sentence is my answer to every macro question I get asked. A regulated nervous system plus influence literacy survives every scenario the doomers can imagine. And underneath it sits one more idea, the one every reader eventually collides with: there is no real self buried under your programming waiting to be found. There is only the programming, and the ability to choose what replaces it. Everything I have written terminates at that choice.
